I like to pretend that DtB: Gemini doesn't exist. I apparently need to include more words for this review. Okay: it introduces some clarity (maybe) and a little bit of extra lore, but it's just... so bad. Do yourself a favour: watch it for the sake of watching, and then forget about it. Pretend like it doesn't exist. "DtB: Gemini? Who dat? I don't know her." The directing could be better. The newly introduced characters could be better. The team is amazing as always, but it's just... Not good. I think if they wanted to continue on, that an entirely different approach would've been more suitable.

(I'm writing this review as someone who's seen season one of Darker than Black, as well as read both manga adaptations.) This special had a decent start, but quickly went downhill and left a sour taste in my mouth by the end of it. The story was incredibly confusing and difficult to follow, and I even felt that they retconned some elements of the first season. Sound design took a nosedive, as well; the background music felt awkward in several scenes, and was even distracting at times. There were moments when the characters acted strangely for seemingly no reason, and it sometimes felt new ones werethrust into the narrative with little to no warning or explanation. The only element I felt improved from season one was the animation. There were a few action scenes that really shone over the course of these four episodes, with some brilliant sakuga moments that I ended up rewinding to rewatch because of how gorgeous they are. The art style itself was on par with that of the original season, too. Maybe if you put on the dub but mute your TV, you'll be maximizing your viewing experience... ?

An entirely unnecessary addition to a fantastic ending of the first season. The story wrapped up nicely, albeit in a rather open-ended manner in the first season. The story is... Lacklustre to say the least. It's something merely pinned on to the end of an already completed story. The only thing that stopped me from rating it lower was improved animation on certain scenes and some stellar fight choreography that outclassed that of the first season. I've been told this was made after the second season to try to make sense of it and make it less shitty by a number of people, if that's thecase... Yikes.

It took me quite a while to get through the first two seasons of this series (especially the first one), but I enjoyed the vast majority of it; while neither were what I would consider truly great (I thought the second was definitely better than the first, which disappointed me upon revisiting), they each had unique ideas and structures to allow for varied experience rather than just the same repeated style. I wound up giving season 1 a modest 6 and season 2 a solid 8 out of 10. So why the lower rating for this particular entry? First up, I absolutely adore Rurouni Kenshin: Trustand Betrayal, and I think my having seen it before DTBG was a massive problem and easily the greatest contributing factor to my too-high expectations. To put it bluntly, I was let down by this show in the enjoyment department; let's move on to why this OVA is objectively worse than its predecessors. I have seen some reviewers dissatisfied with season 2's infrequent fight scenes compared to season 1, but since those few fights tended to look really, REALLY good for the most part, I am inclined to disagree with that sentiment. I am more about quality rather than quantity. That's not to decry the value of season 1's action scenes; some (or rather, most) of them just didn't have the level of flair that some of season 2's did. Considering that Gaiden is a four-episode OVA, which is basically just a two-hour movie, I expected high quality action throughout. Remember, this came out the same year that Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn started airing, so studio Bones had no excuse about OVA animation quality. At least the fight choreography was decent throughout. Ultimately, though, the action didn't look nearly as polished as most of season 2; we had one action scene in the final episode animated by Yutaka Nakamura that lasted all of 15 seconds. Yaaaaaaaay. The art also took a slight dive in comparison to previous seasons. Sometimes Hei's eyes would be too high on his head or something weird like that. It was consistent for the most part, but, again, with my expectations being too high and all, given that this is studio Bones and that this is an OVA, not a full-on series, I found myself disappointed. Music by Yasushi Ishii is basically always awesome, and there were a few great tracks featured here. It just sucks that most of it is reused from the season 2 OST, and that very little of what is actually USED IN THE SHOW is new. At least the whole "Extra Soundtrack" is on YouTube. It also sucks that there's no opening, even in the first episode. Whatever, the ending theme's awesome. I dig it. Story is kinda forgettable. Some d-bag voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch is basically a Nazi and gets the idea of contractors deserving to be atop everyone else and you already got bored because we've seen this a bunch of times before. The plot's stakes are totally nonexistent, which is kinda difficult to work around with a pre-sequel like this, so I can forgive it if it delivers on entertainment, but it didn't really scratch that itch. At least the series is short. In the end, this was disappointing. I wanted to end this franchise with a balls-to-the-wall OVA rife with awesome action and super-badassery but it just wasn't there. Stick with season 1. Or go watch Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. If you want to see a four-part OVA story done right, with ACTUAL hyper-violence and incredible art and animation, as well as a magnificent soundtrack, watch Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal. Happy watching! - LC

*Minor spoilers, mostly discussion about breaks in continuity from season 1* I am honestly conflicted. I first watched this in 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed it, but watching it again now, after having just finished rewatching season 1 has put me in kind of a bad mood. Now, the first time I watched Darker than Black, I couldn't find the dub for season 2 back in 2012, and so I've never watched it. But I have seen season 1 and Gaiden two times each at this point. And while I loved rewatching season 1, I feel like the story here falls short by a large margin. Thereare just too many breaks in continuity in the overarching story. In season 1, the premise is that the gates, the dolls, the contractors... everything appeared 10 years before the story started. By the end of it, we learn that the syndicate was created with the sole purpose of destroying all contractors and dolls. However, in this OVA, that is directly contradicted. Instead, we are told that the Syndicate was created fifty years before (so roughly 38? years before this OVA takes place). FIFTY YEARS! I mean come on. Somehow, someone made a prophecy that a doll (and it's not like anyone even knew what that was at that point) would "awaken" and become a reincarnation of one of the Japanese Shinto gods. And instead of tossing said prophesy in the trash, they created a multinational, multi-BILLION dollar organization with the sole purpose of stopping that from happening. Someone literally went, "oh boy, the local fortune teller said that Izanami is going to be resurrected. Guess I better spend the next 50 years infiltrating every single world power in order to stop that. Yep, that's the plan!" Oh, and those special particles that the syndicate was going to use to destroy all the contractors in the world? The ones that Hei erased from existence in order to choose the third option at the end of season 1, using his sister's power to change matter? And the fact that these particles were erased from existence being the ENTIRE REASON the syndicate fell apart (due to them no longer being able to erase all the contractors)? Yea, apparently they're back for some reason, and the doctor involved in the Saturn Gates is making devices that still use those particles. Like... what? Don't get me wrong, I love the parts of this that involve Hei and Yin. Think it's well done, and I definitely enjoyed it. Worth watching for that alone. But my experience was definitely soured by the complete and utter dismissal of the facts we learned about in season 1. I know this was made after season 2 and it's story is going to be constricted because of that. But maybe there shouldn't have *been* a season 2 if this was the direction they were going to take it. The parts between Yin evolving as a doll, and Hei and Yin's relationship progressing gets a solid 9/10 in enjoyment from me. The parts involving Yin turning into some out of control god, the syndicate apparently forming 40 years before the events of season 1, and every single organization in the world knowing that this was going to happen get a solid 2/10. So going to give this an overall 7, even though it objectively should get like a 4/10.

For all of you out there looking to wash away the bitter taste that Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini left in your mouths, this OVA is EXACTLY what you need. I loved Darker than Black season 1. I thought the characters, atmosphere, and story were all spectacular. Then I watched season 2. And boy, was it different. Virtually every single thing that I loved about season 1 was changed beyond recognition. The ending was so terrible and left me with so many questions that I literally stopped in the middle of my day that and wrote a list of complaints that I had about season2. I was therefore incredibly happy when I began the first episode of Gaiden and could immediately tell that it was going to be a return to form for the anime. Right from the beginning, you'll notice that the art style is back to how it was in the original series, just with improved quality. This works wonders in recapturing the nostalgia that many feel for season 1: it just feels right, like the creators are acknowledging that they messed up with season 2 and now they're going to give us what we actually wanted all along. The music is great, especially the ending, but honestly I would be hard-pressed to recall any moments where I specifically noticed the background music, just because I was always focusing so much on the action onscreen and the dialogue that it never stood out to me. The story is basically an explanation for a whole bunch of nonsense that was thrown at viewers in season 2, and a well-needed one at that. Season 2 makes absolutely zero sense without this, so it functions exactly as it should. That isn't to say that this is all it does, though, but it's hard to go into detail without spoiling anything. I'll just say that the story is back to being Badass Electric Batman Hei and Yin versus the syndicate, instead of being Magical Girl Suou and Alcoholic Hei versus a bunch of trope characters. Character development is where this OVA really digs in deep and hits you hard with the feels. Hei and Yin are on the run from the syndicate together, and all they have in the world is each other. It's all of the drama and relationship development that you were itching to see in season 1, and most of the focus is entirely on them. This leads to some very emotional scenes, and I'll admit that I even shed a few tears over this anime. Overall, I highly recommend Darker than Black: Gaiden to anyone who enjoyed the first 2 seasons of the anime in any capacity. Even if your opinion is the exact opposite of mine and you disliked season 1 and loved Ryuusei no Gemini, you'll likely still appreciate how Gaiden smooths out the story of the second part. I cannot imagine why any fans of season 1 or season 2 would not enjoy this OVA, unless you're only invested in the new characters introduced in season 2 and nothing else.

This OVA is absolutely essential viewing if you enjoyed the first season (the original show) and would like to know what happened thereafter, especially if you want to also eventually watch the second season/series (Gemini of the Meteor). Now, as you probably know from reading comments and reviews about Gemini, which aired after the original series, the story seemed to make little sense and didn't spend a lot of time explaining the unsolved mysteries of the first season. This is all basically amended with this OVA. This is the missing puzzle piece between the first and second season. Some people are obsessed with the ridiculous notionthat anime must be watched in its airing order. Honestly, I've never understood that. There have been many, many times in which anime has released series out of order for various reasons. In the case of darker than black, for some reason they made a second season that didn't explain what happened to Hei and his love after they went on the run, and many other things and concepts were left unexplained. This OVA focuses on that time period, and also explains certain events and the scientific and supernatural reasons for them happening. In fact, if you pay attention to the diaologue, it clears up almost all the questions you would have if you watched season 2 first. However, watching an anime that can get as convoluted as this one out of order is basically just going to give you a big headache and you are may even drop it. So, if you've seen season 1 and were fortunate enough to not have been around for season 2( Gemini) airing, you are awesomely lucky and should watch this OVA, like, now! It's even darker and grittier than the original series, the production value, of course, is even better since it came out more recently, and it'll set you up to enjoy Gemini more than everyone who watched it when it originally aired. Continuity in this show is important, so pay close attention, especially in the last episode, because your enjoyment of Gemini is dependent on your understanding of the overarching story of grandeur and mystery that is Darker Than Black! ❤️😎

First of all, I want to make clear I decided to watch, under previous advice, DTB Gaiden before the second season, therefore I will only focus my attention on these 4 OVAS without bringing up their connection with Ryuusei no Gemini. Darker Than Black Gaiden resumes exactly after the ending of the first season, with Hei and Yin running away from Japan while being tailed down by what remains of the Syndicate. The animation was, as always, quite good, the fighting scenes were sometimes a bit messy, but still enjoyable. I noticed a very poor characterization for both foes and allies of the main characters. Theywould have usually, at the very least, hinted what kind of power or remuneration they went through, but this time they overlooked it altogether. Moreover I couldn't quite understand why would they try to deepen the bond between Hei and Yin, just as I reproved in the first season wherein their relationship was already vague (and detached if I may say so) and absolutely job-related only. Suddenly, while approaching the end, it developed in a romantic subplot totally uncalled for, but still quite enjoyable. Well, that is, if it remained as that. What actually puts me off of those 4 OVAs is this quite well-played display of a clearly romantic development of two characters which until now, never showed any kind of romantic feelings, aside of Yin that we discover arbors feelings for Hei although not very clearly specified. I understand that it is a necessary trope to develop the main plot that will then resume in the second season, but they overly-exaggerated it. As I said Hei changed completely after their gateaway, this is understandable since they were chased off, but he gave off a completely different feeling in comparison with the first season and in the end he became way too desperate because of Yin's disappreance - resulting in an alchool's habit, and to quote Mao's punchline "This is not how a contractor would act". Still we know that Hei isn't a full-fledged contractor, but he still can rationally come to a logical solution like one and, as I see it, they abused this human trait of his. In the end, I feel like they rushed quite a bit the plot and actually tried to gather pieces and elements left unresolved of the story and make a good collage out of it for the sake of keeping the series up. However I think they only dragged it on unnecessarily. They could have actually used these OVAs to explain and clarify what the main story either overlooked or just put aside for running time's sake. Thank you for your time.

A Review of Darker Than BLACK: Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden: Even though it was only a mere four episodes, Gaiden manages to continue the story and feeling of Darker Than BLACK and also greatly fills in a lot of things that were left out in season two. It does a great job of continuing Hei's ever-going quest to do whatever it is Hei likes doing, but one thing that these OVAs have is that they really build character, specifically with Yin. I really liked this aspect because in the main show, it felt like some of the main characters were very neglected, as were the relationshipsbetween some of the characters. Here, however, the relationship between Hei and Yin is the focal point, and it works very well. I enjoyed the main show, and these extra episodes felt right at home with me, so I recommend watching these, especially if you feel a bit lost after season two's ending and general plot And that's why Darker Than BLACK: Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden gets a 7/10
ThanaanDaPagan
To me, Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden are the best episodes among the whole animation. Gaiden is situated between the two seasons and tells the story of what happened to Yin and Hei during this time. It is deeply focused on Yin & Hei relationship as Yin is becoming more "human". -- What I enjoyed the most here is how characters (not only main characters) are shown, I won't say more but if you saw at least the first season you'll enjoy (like really) Gaiden. Except maybe some rare exceptions (according to your feeling meter) you will really FEEL the emotions here. I can't say more tolet you enjoy.. ;) If you saw Kuro no Keiyakusha and Ryuusei no Gemini first like me, then don't worry : it really fill the gap and answer to the "wtf happened ?". It may be just me but I got the impression that Art is improved here and improve the dark ambiance. The story is really good and never lose itself, no side-stories, no unrelated events which could break the thing. You start the first episode with an icecream, and finish the last ripping the bottom of the cup with your twisted spoon. It goes quick, precisely, point on important things. With the characters that's what made my enjoyment meter really high. I highly recommend to watch it, maybe after the second season to leave the anime on a high-feel. Finally, I think that if the whole Darker Than Black animation would have been like this OVAs, I would have given it a 9+. Not saying that it should be "the same" obviously... but it's like what was missing before is finally understood to deliver a 100% full episodes. (may check my other DarkerThanBlack reviews to fully understand this statement). Well, enjoy !

The first season of “Darker Than Black” left the exact fate of two of its central cast in an ambiguous state. This four part OVA continues the story past the first season finale while serving as the transition into the new direction second two would take in Ryuusei no Gemini. This OVA combines the strength of both season into a nice package telling a compelling story, interesting leading characters, and great action scenes. Good: Fills the gap between seasons 1 & 2 This four part OVA can be summarized as a “couple on the run” sort of story. Hei and Yin are trying to survive daily lifewhile escaping from an organization called “The Syndicate” that is hunting them down. There is more to the story than that outline. Primarily showing the growth of Hei and Yin bond and learning why everyone wants Yin. Despite that description the tender moments Hei and Yin share together won’t come across as romantic. How it plays out is more tragic with events appearing to be much bigger than everyone within the series thinks. In just four episodes it takes a relatively small conflict progressively giving it a grander scale in every passing episode. Forcing Hei to challenge himself mentally if the greater good is more important than personal desire. The fact that this isn’t Hei first time making a decision around the same scale practically serves as an essential character moment for understanding his change in personality in season two Ryuusei no Gemini. While short Gaiden does hint on some things to come in season two. For starter, there are brief instances of over the top powers being shown. One example being a contractor that can cause explosions by blowing bubbles. Such powers aren’t a highlighted issue because they don’t stay on screen for a long time. However, they provide the best moments of animation. In particular, the fourth episode, which is the climax of this whole story and allot things blow up literally and narratively. Another reason to watch this OVA for fans is it will fill in the gap between season one and season two. If you go straight into Ryuusei no Gemini, there will be plot points that won’t be addressed. In particular, how Yin got in the positioned she did and why Hei personality changed drastically from the last time he was seen. Also it’s a transition from the old noir direction into the more action oriented direction in Ryuusei no Gemini in each episode. Its start like season one with a noir beginning and ending with Ryuusei no Gemini more action oriented direction. A negative to the “Darker Than Black: Gaiden” OVA are the one-shot characters. A trait that didn’t carry over from the main series was characterization for supporting characters. So the supporting cast feel like tools to move the story forward. This can be forgiven because of the length of Gaiden. It is noticeably rushed in certain scenes. In the first episode, Hei is ambushed at a hotel he’s staying at by two contractors and it just cuts to another scene in the middle of that fight. While it’s not important in the story it is telling, a detail like that can’t be left to the viewer imagination to fill in especially considering what sort of ability that specific contractor has. In the final OVA things end with a hook leading into the second season instead of being self contained. The final scene in Gaiden can be summed up with the word destiny. It’s just a matter of time before it actually occurs because no matter how much the anime wants to stray off from that path it’s written in destiny. Mixed: Only two characters get developed The focus of this four part OVA is on Hei and Yin relationship growing more intimate with one another. Building on two already established becoming more individuals. Given their roles a greater sense of importance once episode 3 and 4 come around with a huge revelation. By the end of Gaiden Hei becomes a more dynamic character. Changing drastically by the end of Gaiden with it being shown with a simple visual that gets across how the following events impacted him. Yin might say little in four episodes, but it’s the simplicity of her words that has lots of meaning. Aside from Hei and Yin the OVA doesn’t focus on any other character. Most of the supporting cast will leave something to be desired especially Mina Hazuki and Youko Sawasaki both of whom are in season two. Showing up with little explanation and no bearing on the story. If it’s not Hei or Yin, then there is nothing more to the character once they get shown. Good: Receives the same treatment as the main series Bones Studio is once again behind the anime series and the production values remain high. The backgrounds are diverse jumping from the industrialized cityscape, to a small tropical island, and a couple more location in its short run. Backgrounds are detailed like in the first season with distinguishable character designs for the entire cast. It does have a few notable design choices that are purely for fan service, though are not on screen for a very long time. Episode two contains the most fanservice out of all the episodes with the character Xiao Jie (whose is name not mentioned in the Gaiden’s OVA) stripping clothing as part of her payment for using her powers. Beyond that example, there’s no other fanservice moment in the same degree. One area the four part OVA improve on from the first season are the action scenes. Like in the first season, the action scenes are restrained in how flashy they are portrayed for three episodes. In the fourth episodes it ditches the restraints it gives itself going for an explosive climax. The major upgrade in the OVA is the choreography for the action sequences are quicker. Utilizing all sorts of framing technique to capture the quick movement. They are animated smoothly displaying Bones Studio at the top of their game in these action sequences. Whenever Hei dodges any sort of projectile attacks his movement never takes any notable shortcut in the animation. The staging of them also improved thank to Hei having to think on the fly more quickly in his combat situations and no dialogue interruption during these action scenes to disrupt the flow. Voice acting from both the Japanese and English cast remains good. Once again the English dub script remains as faithful as possible to the original Japanese script. The changes that are made are barely noticeable in the story it is telling regardless what version is seen. In both the Japanese cast and English dub voice actors reprise their previous role. Hidenobu Kiuchi and Jason Liebrecht provide the voice for Hei. Just like in season one, both actors deliver great performances of a seemingly emotionless character without coming across wooden. To both actors benefits the material allows them more range interacting with their co-stars in situations places Hei out of his element. Easily these two actors are the standout in this four OVA. Brina Palencia and Misato Fukuen both voice Yin. Both actresses do a fine job, but aren’t given much material to build on their performances that feel like a rehash portrayal. As for choosing how to see Gaiden it’s a tie for voice work. Gaiden does not offer time to have a recurring character and allow them time to grow. Unless you’re a big fan of Tetsuya Iwanaga for the Japanese cast or Johnny Yong Bosch for the English dub playing Calude the only other character with a big enough role to take notice off. Simply go with personal preferences since nothing is lost in either version. In the music department, it has a similar soundtrack to Ryuusei no Gemini going more for a thriller vibe. Offering a mixture of rock tracks, techno, and lighter sounding tracks for the more personal moments in the series. The melancholy ending theme “Can You Fly” by Yasushi Ishii is played in every episode. It’s the only noteworthy track in the music department. While in general the soundtrack works “Can You Fly” by Yasushi Ishii is the only memorable track that remains with you after you finish the series. Personal Enjoyment: After spending an entire twenty-four episode season with Hei and Yin I’ve very much appreciated how this four part OVA told an arching story and added upon two already developed characters. Unlike the first season, I immediately got hook into this four part OVA and all it took was one stellar opening action sequence. Thankfully it also had the same quality writing and storytelling that made the first season such a great anime. Story: 2/3 Characters: 2/3 Production Values: 3/3 Personal: 1/1 Final Thoughts: “Darker Than Black: Gaiden” combines the strong writing of season one with the upgraded action scenes of season two. It’s a must watch for any fan to make clearer sense of Ryuusei no Gemini ending and for anyone who wants to continue watching the rest the “Darker Than Black” series without getting lost in the story. Gaiden combines the best elements of both seasons even if it lasts under two hours.

**SPOILER FREE REVIEW OF THE OVA ONLY** I'll keep this short: Anyone who is a fan of Darker than Black NEEDS to find a way to watch these 4 episodes; they are crucial to understanding so many things about the series, including several things that didn't make sense in season 2, the relationship between Hei and Yin, and Hei's character development. The OVA bridges the gap between seasons 1 and 2, explaining what happened to Hei and Yin during that time, and not only is this information vital to the plot, it is incredibly entertaining. This OVA is 4 episodes of pure awesome, as we finallyget long awaited closure about what Hei and Yin meant to each other and how Yin "evolved". There is no comedy, no side arcs, no anything; just 100% plot, and for a story I have become so invested in, I like it that way. In case I didn't make it clear the first time, fans of the series NEED to find a way to watch these episodes, because they are both fantastic and important; I might have enjoyed them more then certain parts of the original series.

There are really only a few useful pieces of information that can be said about KKG. 1) This is a bridge between S1 and S2 of Darker than Black. 2) Even though it came out AFTER S2 you NEED to watch this before you watch S2 or else S2 will make no sense. 3) KKG is good but it sets the stage for all the weird shit that happens in S2. Many people (myself included) were disappointed with S2. Looking back, I may have been happier with the series overall if I just stopped after S1. Most people will find it hard to stop after S1 but stoppingafter KKG is impossible. 4) Don't expect S2 to answer any of the questions you may have at the end of KKG. 5) The action is pretty good and the chemistry between Hei and Yin was done well.

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden is set in the time between Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha and Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor. A Must Watch for all the Darker than Black fans out there! and also not to mention for all the Hei x Yin fans like me. The story is awesome... as always. It explains everything that left us hanging during the course of the second season, it also explains as to why Hei is desperate in finding Yin. The art is fantastic, the art for the characters fit their personality as well as the art for the various actions. The soundis brilliant.. Darker than Black's OST never disappoints me. I really enjoyed this. Of all the series in Darker than Black, the one I really enjoyed the most is this one.

ALthough this was very short is shows the depth between Yin and Hei, the deep unknown relationship till season 3. With only 4 episodes I still love this series. It was very heartfelt and definently set my anime standards very high.

Style - Amazing as expected. 3 out of 3. Character - There is no time for character development in this 4 episode OVA. The characters introduces are okay though. There's Hei and Yin again, who are the same as before. And then there a random Chinese guy who is ok. There is also a guy with the brain-control power, who has the insane goal of creating a world for contractors and is willing to commit mass murder to accomplish it. The guy's partner is sane however, so that balances things out a little. Overall the characters are somewhat likable. 2 out of 4. Story -The story makes just as much sense as DTBS2. Which means it didn't. The whole deal about evolving dolls and prophesy and all that. None of it makes any sense. Basically the whole of Gaiden revolves around Yin's newfound power to kill people, and the prophecy. Everyone is trying to capture Yin, either to prevent the prophecy from coming true or to hurry it up. In the end the brain-controller guy got hold of Yin and managed to make her unstable, with the result that she kills a load of contractors. Moral of the story? Contractors are evil. 0 out of 3. Overall 5 out of 10 for having reasonable but undeveloped characters but a nonsensical story.

I really liked Darker Than Black. Not loved, just liked. What made me fall in love with the entire series was Gaiden. An OVA bridging the gap between the first and second seasons, it did not disappoint. Story - 10: What Gaiden gives is answers. A better understanding of what went down between Hei and Yin between the two seasons, and a good preventative of confusion before watching Gemini of the Meteor. It has all the amazing qualities of the first season, jam-packed with exciting, intense action and fight scenes, but also smoothly introduces a new chapter in the lives of Hei and Yin. A fantastic mixof old and new, and a perfect segue into Gemini of the Meter. And let's not forget the slight touch of romance which is far more pronounced in this OVA - always a crowd pleaser, especially for ladies such as myself! Character - 10: What drives the storyline is the characters. We see so much development in the character of Yin, while more of Hei is revealed to us and his stance as a human with contractor powers. The way the relationship between the two strengthens in such a short amount of episodes is extremely fulfilling. Enjoyment - 10: There was not a single moment where I felt bored, or wanted to watch half the episodes one day and the rest the next. I was hooked from the very beginning and did not rest until I watched the entire thing. I was surprised at how this OVA affected my emotions - I found myself smiling so widely at one part and then feeling my heart clench with shock and being close to tears the next. A good anime has the ability to connect with you emotionally, and that's just what Gaiden did. Overall - 10: I thought I'd never come across another anime which I could find no fault with, but how wrong I was. I was pleasantly surprised by Gaiden's overwhelming effect on me, and its ability to push Darker Than Black as a whole into my favourite anime list. A must-see and a top recommendation. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll smile so wide your cheeks will hurt, but most of all, if you love Darker Than Black, you'll love Gaiden.

Darker than Black OVA (JAP title: Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden) NOTE 1: This OVA/Gaiden covers the events that occur between season one and season two. However, I recommend you watch this only after watching them first. NOTE 2: This review is spoiler-free. This OVA consists of only 4 episodes, so, just like my Kaiba review, this will be a…[ 3 MINUTE REVIEW ] Most of us, who watched season two, were really confused. Why had Hei grown out his hair? When did he become a drunkard? Where is Yin? Fortunately, this OVA answers all of those questions. Basically, if you watched the two seasons, then watching the Gaiden is a must. The OVA follows the events that occur immediately after the end of season one. The story is one of the best and fits the 4 episodes like a glove. At no point of time do you feel bored. There is action, adventure, romance, drama and mystery. The story revolves around Yin and Hei. Their feelings towards each other are what the four episodes are mostly about. You finally get to see what Yin is thinking. The mood of the anime is very serious and there is no comic relief or lightness whatsoever. The animation is great and it’s really amazing how Yin’s expressionless face shows emotions so subtly. Hei remains as awesome as ever. Voice acting is great. And the soundtrack is excellent. I don’t really have much to say here. Episodes are intricately designed in such a way that you find yourself canceling other plans to marathon the 4 episodes. However, if you’re a long time anime fan, you might find it a bit predictable, but you’ll still enjoy it. The Bottom-line: Darker than Black OVA is everything is should be – clear, concise and completely enjoyable.

First of all, I would like to point out here that I'm trying to make this as unbiased as I can, unlike one of the other reviewers (whose name I won't mention) who after just 1 episode already predicted that this would be great. Clear sign of a fanboy. I'll be reviewing it on the basis of it's purpose, i.e. answering the questions that left you confused or unanswered in Ryuusei no Gemini. I'll go through the other sections first though. The artwork in this is very much in keeping with the second series. It's sharp and well animated, if not a bit too dark at times, but then it is called Darker than BLACK (gotta count for something eh?). Nothing much wrong with the art or the animation without being overly exceptional at any aspect. Now's where things become a bit more touchy. The sound, in terms of Voice-overs, are fine. The main VAs return and do a good job. But the music compared to the series seems a bit lackluster. The only redeeming music score I found was in the last episode, with a melancholy vibe generated by a piano & violin (?) number that played out a signicant sequence well (without spoiling). It's a shame because I thought the music complimented the 2nd series very well, but then this is only a special. The character situation is also a split decision, ultimately depending on whether you liked Hei from series 1 or series 2 better. If it's the former, you'll probably enjoy it more. The no-nonsense action is back too, with the battle scenes becoming quite intense at times as Hei jets around the area eliminating enemies. There are more signs of compassion from Hei here, similar to that seen in series 2, so BONES have tried to cater for both. Some of the other characters, such as Claude also do serve a decent purpose in trying to lead the awakening of Izanami in what he feels will help contractors rule the human race. But that isn't the problem. The problem is that the specials are trying to bridge the gap for the 1st to 2nd series. That should include the developments in the characters from how they made the transition from each series. There wasn't alot of development here. Hei suddenly gained a drinking problem any the only conclusion that can be made as to why is because of depression. But if your answering questions, why be so vauge about it? Thats only making the specials harder to understand. Nor does Yin (not Izanami) develop, as the audience can form their own conclusion that Yin love Hei at the end of the 1st series anyway. It's just saying it that she hadn't done. This is just part of the problem with the narrative. While some loose ends are tied, some obvious ones are not. Why did Hei go to Russia? How did they (the CIA) know that Shion was such an important influence in the Awakening process? Was it detailed in the Mitaka documents? These were not explained among others. *SPOILER WARNING* Other inconsistences include the fact that upon awakening, Inzanami didn't kill Hei but killed the rest. Why? Is it because of Izanagi? (see S2) Is it because Yin stopped them for killing him? And if Hei is supposed to be a contractor that are emotionless, then why couldn't he kill her when she asked for it? *SPOILER OVER* And this is the problem with Gaiden. Yes, it does answer some of the questions that the 2nd series conjured up. But it only lead to more confusion in the process. Not only that, but having to cram it into four 24 minute specials really do give the end product a rushed feel, a slighlt unfinished feel. I'm not saying to avoid these specials, because it will help to detail what happened between series. But that doesn't stop it feeling rushed and still with holes in it. To Conclude: It does it's job, but feels as though they tried to get this done and distribute it as soon as possible. It feels rushed, but it does still feel like DtB, which is probably why many will not agree with my conclusion. But hey! A review is to voice your own critical opinion right? Note: Add 1 to the overall score if you absolutely loved the first series action. SpudUK
