Synopsis
At the request of Queen Victoria, Earl Ciel Phantomhive goes to Weston College—a prestigious public academy for boys, known for its traditions and outstanding curriculum—to search for a relative of hers who has not returned home in months. Thanks to his noble status, the 13-year-old Ciel is swiftly able to enroll as a student, while his devilish butler Sebastian Michaelis assumes a teaching position at the school. Ciel does not anticipate being unable to locate the Queen's relative on campus. To make matters worse, he cannot request a meeting with the headmaster of the college, who may be the only person that knows anything pertaining to the disappearance. The only ones in frequent contact with the headmaster are the heads of the college dormitories, known as the Prefect 4 (P4): Edgar Redmond, Lawrence Bluewer, Herman Greenhill, and Gregory Violet. Ciel must concoct a plan to get in the P4's good graces if he wants to use their connections to succeed in his mission. But the distinguished college and its students hide much that is unseen, making this task more improbable than he could imagine. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

This Black Butler arc was... okay. The animation was gorgeous, and the opening, as always, stood out with its unique and captivating style but it also set me up with expectations that didn’t quite align with how the arc unfolded. It felt like Yana Toboso simply wanted to write a whimsical boarding school story with Harry Potter like flair in 19th-century England and just decided to go all in with that vision. If I were reading this arc as a manga fan, chapter by chapter each month, I think I would’ve felt a bit let down due to the pacing and direction. That said, there’s stilla lot of charm and quirkiness here. The “Prefect Four” face a similar issue to the Circus Gang from Book of Circus despite having a fair amount of screen time, I found myself wishing we got to explore more of their individual personalities. Some fans have criticized this arc for having Ciel and Sebastian running around doing slice-of-life activities, and yes, maybe their reasons for doing so weren’t the most compelling but the execution had heart. The time and effort spent on each school event gave a real sense of presence, like I was experiencing student life alongside them. These moments, while seemingly minor to the viewer, clearly hold meaning for the students, and that emotional sincerity came through far more than most high school anime "event" arcs. From a plot perspective, knowing Yana Toboso’s narrative style and her tendency to carefully link arcs together, many fans could probably guess how things would turn out, especially if they paid attention to the clues presented since Book of the Atlantic. So while the ending made sense logically, it may not have felt particularly surprising or impactful in terms of adding something new to the overall story. Ciel’s arc remains consistent with his ongoing character trajectory, which works, but doesn’t shake things up. One criticism I do have is the handling of the Maurice Cole subplot. While I can understand it from a character and narrative standpoint, when you view it in the context of the arc as a whole, it just feels underwhelming and a bit flimsy. Those who’ve finished the arc will likely understand the dilemma I’m referring to. Overall, it’s not a bad arc, just one that has its highs, its charm, but also some missed potential.

Black Butler: Public School Arc brings the series back with a fresh setting, a compelling mystery, and the signature gothic elegance that fans have come to love. This arc takes Ciel Phantomhive and his ever-loyal butler, Sebastian, into the rigid and prestigious world of an elite boarding school, where secrets lurk behind its disciplined facade. One of the standout elements of this arc is its atmosphere. The anime does an excellent job of immersing viewers in the refined yet unsettling environment of the school, filled with strict traditions, hidden power struggles, and an air of mystery that keeps you engaged. The story unfolds at a steadypace, balancing its darker themes with moments of wit and charm. Sebastian remains as sharp and effortlessly cool as ever, while Ciel's cunning is put to the test in new and unexpected ways. The supporting cast introduces intriguing new characters, each adding their own layer to the unfolding mystery. The animation and art direction maintain the high-quality, Victorian-inspired aesthetic that Black Butler is known for, while the soundtrack enhances the mood with hauntingly beautiful compositions. While the arc doesn’t reinvent the formula, it delivers a solid and satisfying addition to the Black Butler saga. Fans of the series will appreciate the return of its signature blend of mystery, dark humor, and stylish action. If you enjoy intelligent plots with a touch of the supernatural, Public School Arc is definitely worth watching.

Suffering through the pain that is Seasons 1 and 2 is ultimately worth it when you get to Book of Circus and Public School Arc. Despite animated frames that obviously look like they were generated by AI, an improvement in animation quality after a six to seven year break from Black Butler helps give the show a much needed visual update. The season on the whole is decent but if you didn’t notice the plot problems, then you’re blind. Weston is so obviously a Hogwarts ripoff, it’s one color away from being a copyright infringement. And it really feeds into British stereotypes like they liketea and cricket that it’s borderline offensive. But on a whole, the season is good and it manages to connect to the previous releases in a satisfactory way. Still haven’t decided if I’ll watch the Emerald Witch Arc simulcast or not.

They need to make these seasons longer again. Some of the best Black Butler content is them milling about, getting involved in random shenanigans and stumbling upon mysteries. The finale was a great reminder of this. Public School has some great arcs and plot development but it rushes to a messy and hasty conclusion. Brings in a lot of expository elements and callbacks to quickly wrap up a story that should’ve gone way deeper and at least another 5 or so episodes. That said I love this show, they have something inexplicable with Ciel, Sebastian, the Victorian setting, the balance between humor and drama. Ilove watching it through its ups and downs.

I honestly really enjoyed this arc more than the others T_T I'm just a sucker for these infiltration plots. The beginning really hooked me and I don't really watch anime anymore. The art style is nice but I honestly prefer the old one as it seemed more gothic and more true to the nature and aesthetic of Black Butler. Ciel is too brilliant, and although there is a lack of fight scenes it focuses more on strategy games which is pretty thrilling to me. I think the tension and the pace was rather good, and the build-up was fantastic. I'm glad they created this seasonalbeit 7 years since the last one... The end credit scene on episode 11 (which really seemed to be a filler...) suggests a prequel so I'm hyped for that. If there are any downsides, for one Viscount Druitt came back (EW) and they had a very questionable cricket scene showing Harcourt after poisoning. Japan strikes yet again smh. Did not like that.

I'm not so satisfied with the anime, there are very few fight scenes, I really liked season 1 & somewhat of season 2. The renewed art is cool, they could avoid using English in a mix of Japanese, if you ask me, please refer to season 1 & develop the upcoming sequel. I miss those in-house characters, and the dominance of Ciel is missing, if you notice, in seasons 1 & 2, he is strategic & he is like the singular power, but not in the public school arc, it is a bit down in this season. The story was a soft reboot, but they could've pitchedmore. Thank you.

I started this series without knowing that this actually has prequels. Not that it would change my review, even if I watched the previous season/movies. Except for MC and his butler, almost all the other characters are new and introduced in this arc. Except for the last episode, which is more of a filler / fan service episode. Plot The story seems to involve a young detective MC who has made a contract with a demon. The demon is MC's butler and helps him with his investigation by joining the school as a teacher. MC joins as a student. The case dealt with in this seasonis a "missing person" mystery in a school ruled by 4 student council members (or something like that). Review Anyway, this is not a season that has much to talk about. The art and animation was good. The mystery was meh from the very beginning. But the way it is solved is downright insulting. At times, I had to wonder if this was a parody of mystery novels. MC just gets information by asking other students, and/or using his powerful butler to gather information. Its not like MC derives any cool insights from the information he gathers. Its literally just gathering mysteries, hatching plans and executing them... The worst part was probably the cricket match episodes and the final reveal. MC displays some of the worst sportmanship possible by cheating his way through the game and the anime shows it like its a deserved win smh. And that final reveal of missing person.. oof. Almost made me quit right then and there, but I had to power through as I was so close to the end. Considering the all boys school, and our MC with the male butler, I didn't realize it at first. But reading other reviews it finally struck me.. This is a yaoi bait manga. Although some students straight up look and sound like girls, its all still boys. There was not much in terms of romance tho, so it is still bait and doesn't commit to any actual yaoi content. Finally, I think you can watch this series if you turn off your brain, but why would you do that in a mystery show? More importantly, except for the butler, the rest of the cast lack the charm to engage the audience's interest. They are all boring one dimensional templates with very predictable dialogues.

An unexpected renewal of a beloved anime classic. An enjoyable, while slightly disappointing experience. This 'Public School Arc' was created for the fandom to embrace nostalgia. Listening to the original English dubbed cast bring our favourite characters back to life, while ushering in a new era for Black Butler franchise. With exquisite animation, a solid rock-based OST (That reminds audiences of the original series), and positive character-development behind the two male protagonists. It was refreshing seeing Ceil and Sebastien work alongside one another so effortlessly, while simultaneously not being dependent on one another. Both are able to act alone to move the plot forward. This madethe two appear as equals for the first time, not only as master and servant, nor as demon and prey. It should be stated that this season is a pale comparison to the original plot line. Not having the same menacing undertones as the previous three seasons, it didn't shake the audience with unforeseen twists or create a void of despair (as the demon butler Sebastien craved) after the affects of Lord Phantomhive's orders. No, this was a far more lighthearted and predictable story. We see Ceil masquerading as a young student in high society and excelling among his peers, never neglecting the heartlessness of his true nature, but presenting a relatable side to his usual arrogance. Likeable side-characters, with unfortunately underwhelming motivations. The concept of old English traditions, social edict and shameless brainwashing was present, but also exhaustingly drilled. The humour and wacky actions to move the plot were delightfully placed throughout the season, making each episode enjoyable (though, lacked real impact). One large benefit to this adaptation was that it able to create ties between 'The Book of Murder' OVA and 'The Book of The Atlantic' Film. Relinquishing their tags as meagre cash-grabs. Regardless, this is still a recommended watch. With an open ending after the 11th episode, audiences are excitedly awaiting a follow up season. Hopes are high that we may see the ruthlessness and sheer devastation of the original, since it's obviously laying down the foundation for something much bigger to come.

So, it's finished. After some years and after getting a new studio to adapt school arc, those results are really promising. First of all I have to point to graphics probably. Those arts and animations are just amazing. From the overall graphic of characters to really well-made details as Ciel's eyes or reflection and movement of the water in cup of the tea. It's really something what will catch your eye in the first seconds. Of course some art and animations are not the most important here. Despite many people being worried about story adaptation and design of characters, I would say it ended up pretty well.School arc was interesting one, with a lot of twists and details as much as funny situations. My personal issue lies simply in ending, it feels kinda "meh". Some longer conversation with main antagonist here or a bit better final episode would make just an honor to this piece. Also it's amazing even after years we have same voice actors for the main characters. It definitely brings some nostalgia after years. I don't agree with some opinions that the entire feeling or aura around Ciel and/or Sebastian has been changed. I am pretty sure some people have been watching previous seasons much younger and simply created some fake reasons for themselves to like it or to hate it. While I would agree that Sebastian's aura couldn't be seen that much in this arc as there have been some plot-wise limitations, I still seriously think he maintained his picture, behavior and feeling. And this applies to Ciel as well. I especially love how they maintained through years and different studios his small facial expressions and his overall mood and thus they basically kept his aura as well. In the end it has been a great season and I hope we will get another one, as we could see in post-credit scene some hint for the next arc. Good quality stuff for Kuroshitsuji fans as this season brought good things from previous ones and discarded the bad ones.

After 7 whole years, Black Butler has finally gotten an anime sequel that a lot of fans, including myself, have been waiting for. Ever since Book of Atlantic came out, we've asked ourselves about what's next in store for us, anticipating what's coming next. And now that the continuation is here, one question remains: Was the wait worth it? In my opinion, it is, in fact, worth the wait. Not only being an amazing adaptation of the manga, but also being a very solid arc overall. As we know, this season's Black Butler was adapted by a different studio, and while some people were excited, somewere worried too. But now that it has finished, I can definitely say that there wasn't anything to be concerned about. It is without a doubt as great as previous seasons, specifically Book of Circus, Murder, and Atlantic. There were, however, some dislikes among people about the anime's new artstyle in particular. Saying that the Public School arc's art is not only more colorful and about how Sebastian's design is worse, but also that the overall tone and vibe are not darker than previous seasons. For the latter, it is clearly not the case. While there were more comedic scenes and less tension at the beginning, slowly but surely, it builds up as it usually goes with Black Butler, reminding us that it is overall a dark fantasy and mystery. As for the former, there's not much to say other than the fact that, at the end, it all comes down to preference. Personally, both are good in their own perspective ways. However, regarding Sebastian, some people have judged too quickly, I won't go into too many details, but all that needs to be said is that it didn't need to be a concern after all. All in all, CloverWorks has done an overall good job with this adaptation. Now, as for the plot itself, after the whole event at Book of the Atlantic, Ciel and Sebastian entering a public school to investigate the disappearances of students may seem underwhelming at first, but the start's similar for the majority of the arcs adapted already. This arc itself could simply be considered a build-up for the series' overarching story, or, in other words, the calm before the storm. Even taking into account the subtle foreshadowings and mysteries revealed. This has always been one of Black Butler's biggest charms. To sum it up, even with A-1 Pictures being out of the picture, this season has managed to retain the qualities of the previous seasons, even with a studio and art style change. and overall, worth waiting for a long time. As of writing this, there hasn't been any announcement of a sequel, aside from a post-credit scene indicating of Emerald Witch, Black Butler's next arc. But again, even if it takes weeks, months, or even years, it wouldn't be a problem as long as it remains to receive good treatments.
