When I first heard about an anime focused on politics, I thought it would be some folks talking about nation's problem that has nothing to do with me. I would rather watch shows like Attack on Titan. But I decided to watch one episode and then quit if it didn’t interest me. Funny enough, I ended up watching all four seasons and am excited for the next season. I really love this show. So you're still here? Good, Lemme tell you why! Story - 10/10"Would you prefer a clean dictatorship or a corrupt democracy?" Set in a future where humanity is divided into three regions—FPA (democracy), Fezzan (neutral), and the Galactic Empire (autocracy)— I initially thought the story would just be about ongoing wars and revenge between the FPA and the Galactic Empire. But it goes much deeper, exploring big ideas about war, politics, and human nature. The show shows both the good and bad sides of each region and lets you decide where you would stand. I won’t spoil it, so you should watch it to find out. Characters - 10/10 The show really digs into each character, focusing on Yang Wen-Li and Reinhard Von Lohengramm, who are enemies. Even though they have different views and backgrounds, they’re very quite similar. They never meet face-to-face, which adds depth to their connection. I love all the characters, no matter which region they’re from. Yang Wen-Li, in particular, is portrayed as a lazy genius with a calm demeanor which somehow remind me of Oreki Houtarou (my favourite character in Hyouka). His appearance always give me a relief sigh despite how tough the situation is. He can turn a complete disadvantage situation to neutral or even winning position. His strategic is skill is really impressive that would caught watcher attention. Sound - 10/10 The soundtrack, opening, and ending are all fantastic. Hiroyuki Sawano, known for his phenomenal work on Attack on Titan, Aldnoah.Zero, and 86, does an amazing job with the music in this show. My favorite tracks are "Binary Star" (OP1) and "Tranquility" (ED), which are now top picks for me. Animation - 10/10 Now welcome to my hot take section: The new animation is better than the original OVA. While the original is good, the updated version fits better with today’s technology and style. The new designs, like the younger-looking Frederica Greenhill, fit the original light novel better. The updated animation gives a more modern and satisfying experience. Not saying the old is bad, Die Neue These is just way more relevant on my viewpoint. Overall - 10/10 I’m really looking forward to the next season. I haven’t watched the original OVA because I wanted to fully enjoy this remake’s experience. This show has truly impressed me, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a thought-provoking anime. Thanks to this anime, I finally can watch something that can extend my attention span rather than scrolling social media.

I mean I love everything about this show, even tho I'm not a big fan of their desings in the new thesis but still. Why did I gave it 10? SIMPLY becasue it covers everything from our reality (the inquiry was outstanding) , sometimes it seems as if it is a documentary of our world but then transformed into an anime. not to mention how great the animation was even if it is CG, the warp scene was crazy and I just can't describe how great it was paired with the goated soundtrack. I'm glad they are taking their time and they do not seem theyare rushing to end it. almost every book requires 12 epsiodes andd this season was no exception. Also it seems the author is envolved as a supervisor and that's reassuring.

Look, if you enjoy the Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu / Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise, you're going to enjoy this. It's the continuation of the remake of a beautiful and compelling story. The voice actors gave solid performances, the animation is fluid and story wise, we get more of what makes this franchise so good to watch. I particularly loved watching the backstory behind some of Reinhard's allies. So... why a 5? Well... I'm not the average fan of the series. What really gets me hyped is Reinhard and because some episodes don't focus on him or his allies, I get bored. I have a weird Reinhard-fansyndrome. So, if you love this universe you'll love this series. If you only care about half this universe (like me ahah), you'll enjoy half of it x'D

LotGH is slowly becoming the forefront series that is defining the space opera genre of the 2020's, and I'm so fucking happy that I.G. are investing heavily into the franchise. As a fan of the OVA, I had high hopes coming into this season. This season adapts all but the last chapter of book 3 of the novels (will conclude first episode of next season), so that means we're just getting into the juicy parts of the story. As a movie trilogy, the production values are excellent. The CGI has improved massively, the artwork is more crisp and refined, the animation is fluent, the spacebattles are epic. Nothing less for an amazing series. Even the ED is entirely CG, and mixed with the song as the camera scrolls backwards through the battlefield and into the command ships, it gives that feeling of tragedy and sorrow, which fits the show well. It's definitely my favorite ED in terms of song and animation, but Binary Star still remains my favorite OP. The show is still missing that old classical soundtrack that the OVA used, however, I think modern orchestral music still fits really well with the modern aesthetic and art style of the show. And it's been used properly in many of the dialogue scenes to bring out the key tones that the viewers feel as the story progresses and as the characters philosophize about war and politics. And as the seasons go on, we'll hear more tracks come out. Perhaps movie trilogies are the way to go for the series. If they can produce this quality of animation and earn their money back to invest in even more seasons on a regular basis, then more power to them. It might look weird as the entry types on MAL would be Movie, but who cares as long as they adapt all 10 volumes? Since I've already seen the OVA, I have nothing to say about the story and characters as they're already a 10/10. Overall, my high hopes and expectations have truly been met for this season. I wanted to give this a 9-9.5/10 since this is only one small part of the story, but the show has impressed me enough to say 'fuck it' and give it a 10/10. I think from now on is where the remake is really gonna shine if I.G. play their cards right.

We get into volume 3 of the novel here. This set of episodes contains one of my favorite parts, which is when Yang sits at the tribunal and rebukes their arguments. You see variants of this pretty often. People argue about which should come first: individual liberty or loyalty to the state. Even in a liberal democracy, many people will still claim the latter, even though it is the more authoritarian answer. Separately, the show also brings up the idea of "liberal imperalism," which in this case refers to rule for the people but not by the people. I would have chosen the wording differently, butwhatever. It is a bizarre situation when an autocrat is pushing reforms that expand people's rights, while an elected government is stripping them away. There are many characters who get well-deserved characterization and backstory here, such as Mittermeyer and Reuenthal. Kempff also feels more like his own person at this point, interacting with his family, among other things. He never really got a chance before. Some of the interactions between Reinhard and Hilda also develop both pretty well here. Many scenes have been notably expanded from the novel and are different than in the OVA as well. For instance, when discussing Reinhard's reforms, you can see some random citizens cheering for him and thinking about what they will do with their new rights. When Julian goes out on his first mission as a fighter pilot, a few characters and scenes were added. We also see more of Oberstein's dog for some reason. The fortress battle lasts for three full episodes (and actually a bit more), and I am a bit torn on whether it felt a bit too long already. I would maybe cut a few minutes, but it isn't a huge issue. I still liked the visuals quite a bit. Some people always dislike CGI, no matter how it is used, but I am not one of them. It works very well in space battles especially. But let's have some fair criticism too. "Show, don't tell" is broken on a few occasions. For instance, Mecklinger is described as highly capable, but he has been sidelined so badly that he has never got any real chance to demonstrate his skills. Want us to think that he is competent? Show him do it. This is a general observation about Reinhard, but his reaction to Kircheis' absence is so weirdly misdirected. There would be better ways to process his emotions than insist on imperialist conquest. Actually, it is Kircheis' fault as well. Perhaps "live in peace" would have been better as parting words. However, they did a good job highlighting that the narrative does not endorse Reinhard's approach. Several characters point out that the focus on military expeditions is unwise, to say the least, and even Reinhard himself feels alienated by his newfound power. That is emphasized here a bit more strongly than in the OVA. The last episode ended at somewhat of a weird point, but there will be another set of episodes soon, so it isn't a huge issue. Regardless, it is a very strong adaptation effort. You often see novel adaptations rushed and ruined, but here they are investing proper time into it.

This new adaptation will forever be cursed by it's superior 80s version. What the staff wanted to do here is to give Die Neue These a life of it's own. As a result, the immense amounts of anime only content in the 80s adaptation, and the changes they made, are absent here. That's why it feels so empty to me, who hails the 80s adaptation of Legend of the Galactic Heroes as one of the greatest political wonders in anime, and second in my own taste, only to Ashita no Joe. And this is not a bad thing about Die Neue These's approach. It's justmuch more faithful to the novels. Take the 80s OVA series. You can see the obvious Kai influence from Mobile Suit Gundam in their own version of Poplan. It's even the same voice actor. There's Noburo Ishiguro's comedic style from Macross's influence. The love triangle between Jean Robert Lap, Jessica Edwards, and Yang Wen-li was given immense amounts of extra content from the same people that worked on romances also from Macross and Orgus. Their depictions of war are brutal from their influence from Mobile Suit Gundam, Ideon, Macross, and Space Battleship Yamato. Many of the staff even worked on some of those. As a result, the 80s version of Legend of the Galactic Heroes was blessed with staff who had made the classic space operas. It's a culmination of all this talent from the 70s and 80s; a product of it's time. They tried to improve the novels as much as they could, and even boosted Dusty with a much more heavier presence than in the novels. The character designs, though suffers from it's original animation, are still beautiful and tell you a lot about the characters. It was a passion project that didn't even air on television. Die Neue These abandons most of this. It had a rough start. The earlier episodes before Collision were rough. They watered down the politics, the music was laughable, the character designs an insult to the characters and 80s version viewers, the battles lost their fangs and brutality in execution, they cheapened out on the melee battles, the CGI looks like it has no heart put into the ship designs, and it felt like slideshows to my absolute frustration and disappointment. Even as a stand alone, it was doing nothing for me. With Collision, the improvements have been major. This adaptation is getting better and better as it goes. I actually have hope for it now. I'll always be mentally scarred from the character designs, but I have to say that Collision was very enjoyable and made me stop cursing at the staff. Seeing all these characters again has been an emotional journey. Watching Reinhard burn with his ambitions, Oberstein's Machiavellian brilliance and truth that no one can debate, Kirchei's struggle to be a strong moral force, and Yang Wen-Li's humble political analysis and leadership as a talented tactician, is inspiring to see. There are so many wonderfully written characters that I could go on and on about all of them. I don't want to waste too much of your time, however. With Collision, Ruenthal and Mittermeyer's friendship gets fleshed out. For me, it was the inquiry episode I was anticipating, and it didn't disappoint me. I'll never get tired of Yang Wen-Li bravely putting parasitical politicians, like the ones in our world that claim to be leading us, in their place. Rupert's cunning was introduced, and Rubinsky playing space chess with the Empire and Alliance is always amusing to watch. What I do appreciate about Collision are the new things it's doing. For example, Oberstein's humane side is shown more by putting more focus on his dog, and how he gathers intelligence behinds the scenes. It feels surreal to be alive during a new adaptation of this series. Even though it's mostly ignored where I live, even by seasonal addicts, it's still special to me because it's a strong story. The series goes on to critique democracy and defend the Empire's autocracy. Democracy can be led by corruption, and an autocracy can find hope in a just ruler. The politics are always wonderful to think about and discuss. It's really still just the beginning.
