Between the first season airing on Netflix and the release of these bonus episodes I went and read the entire manga. I wanted to know how the story ended and I don't exactly remember my feelings on it at the time, but I can remember feeling satisfied and having a sense of closure. It was done in my mind and I hardly expected there to be any more to the anime adaptation. I have a little experience with waiting for season 2's and in general my thinking is "don't hold your breath." Imagine my surprise when it did, in-fact, get more of the story adapted. Ihonestly didn't really feel like watching it anymore since now I knew how it ended and these 3 episodes wouldn't even get that much further into the story anyway. Eventually I watched it anyway, so here are my thoughts I guess. I honestly freaking hate that blonde girl so much. I know that it's a requirement in any romance anime to have at the very least a love triangle if not a full harem of girls to choose from, but why oh why is one of them always painted this way. Are that many Japanese writers victims of one-sided love that they feel the need to insert an obnoxious wedge into any and every budding relationship. I know it's supposed to add drama and keep the story going but for me it honestly just felt like headaches and throwing a bid unnecessary monkey wrench into an already needlessly complicated relationship. When we finally get back to the story between the two main lovebirds it's actually really sweet. The things he does with the RPG game and the way that her sister and butler start standing up for her was all great. I like that the b*tch of a tutor finally got told off and starts to look like she's coming around a little. Unlike the main part of season 1 that ended on a stupid cliffhanger with the dumb blonde girl, we actually get a nice happy ending for once with the two of them getting to go to that arcade event thingy together. Honestly I'm happiest watching a romance show when the two established leads get to be together and be in love without the annoying complications of some trite love triangle. For what it's worth, I think you're supposed to hate that blonde girl as part of her character or something. Despite her existence I still enjoyed it enough for an 8/10

A couple days ago I made a review to the first part of High Score Girl, so I'll try to not recollect any of the same points. Some things still apply, some don't. In that review, I said that my main motivation to watch this anime was the RPG Maker reference, which I finally got to see! Anyway, RPG Maker references always warms my heart. Moving on! Art and characters are just as one dimensional, yes they're 3D, that's the joke here. Animations are stiff and especially main characters are bland. In these OVAs some characters are introduced, which make my claim more evident, they haveway more interesting designs. I do understand that this is on purpose to make the characters feel more grounded, but still think that making a gamer stereotype will not make me sympathize with him as a human being. Still, I felt that these 3 episodes managed to show more character development than the 12 first episodes. In terms of story, this was the ending the first season lacked. So yeah, if you watched first season, BUY THE OVA DVDs! (or watch on Netflix). Nothing else to say. I'm strugging to not score this series just based off my enjoyment, because it's a nostalgia trip. I really want to score this series for its story and character development, and not for how spot on were they for giving me the fuzzy feelings out of CPS references and Soul Calibur. AND RPG MAKER. So, in essence. Still not a great show, status quo moved a bit which is enough for OVAs. Characters are there, got some development, MC feels a bit less annoying as the series goes. I don't want to ellaborate much more in fear of spoiling anything since it's just 3 episodes. So there! If you felt like something was missing after finishing season 1, this is it.

High Score Girl: Extra Stage (2019) This is not really a set of OVA but more a continuation of the first 12 episodes. I guess they wanted to bring out a 15-episode season originally but were unable. It is literally picking up from episode 12 directly so it flows nicely. It is pretty much the same in most categories to the other part since it directly moves forwards. It, however, does have so much more development and it is just beautiful to watch that development. It has a beautiful finale where sometimes what is unsaid is worth more than what is said. Read between the lines isthe way this shows itself so well. Thankfully a new season is due and this series does deserve it.

Extra-stage is a great follow up to the main series. In terms of story, I felt like the progress of the captivating romance was very slow-paced, but fortunately this does not compromise the anime, as each individual episode manages to stand out on its own, always presenting something new. This time, we're introduced to some new characters and some already know ones were further explored, which brought a novelty feeling. The fan-service on 90s Japanese videogames industry hit me hard, and I don't even know much about it. The inserts of pixelated videogame characters on the representation of Haruo's thoughts keeps being exceptional. I've mentionedthat my favorite part about High Score Girl is that it convinces you everyone has a different reason to play. You can tell the videogames are not there only so the anime can get a nostalgic feeling and catch the viewer's attention through fan-service. As you get to know the characters, you realize each one has a different reason why they enjoy playing and each one has a different way of playing, which translates to their personality. This becomes obvious on "round 14" and is something I wasn't expecting when I first heard about the series. This anime delivers what it aims to be, can't recommend it enough.

High Score Girl: Extra Stage. It's called this, but to say that it's "Extra" would not be true at all, as episode 12 ended on a cliff hanger even Teen Titans 2003 would be impressed with. A better name would have been "Final stage", like Inital D does. Back to actually reviewing the show/ova, it picks up right after ep 12 of season 1. Haruo has been challenged by Hidaka, who serves as Sans to Oono's Asgore. Hidaka gets her challenge, and her arc gets a completion. Then comes what you really want, more of Haruo and Oono trying to make their way to each otherthrough their struggles, the main obstacle being Oono's family teacher. A concept that sounds like an anime villain even in real life. Haruo, with the help of a new character from Oono's family, finally designs a solution perfectly fitting the video game motif of the show. At the end we get a happy ending, a supposed season 2, and an Eva reference. Sounds as though the creators are team Asuka. (sould just be promotion for the new eva dub on netflix too.) Overall, these last 3 episodes tie everything up into a nice bow, exactly how you'd want them to, and do so while still making use of the wonderful op and ed. Glad this is a show that actually got an ending, not all anime can say that. *cough* No Game No Life *cough* Score: 7/10. P.S.; I would have put this out around a week sooner, but my Pirate crew of choice didn't have it out on the release date MAL said, hence this is a bit later than preferred. oh well.

Sometimes an OVA is considered a filler and the place for the discarded episodes. In this case, it is different. The Extra episodes of High Score Girl are a prelude of what we're going to watch in the second season. YES, a second season that was already announced. The episodes continue with the same structure from the main series. As a significant development, we can appreciate Yaguchi and Hidaka's fight and their perseverance towards their feelings. Furthermore, the relationships are not dull or repulsive even if some persons think they are a cliché. The series continues following the main idea from the main series, themanga, and that is a plus for the spectators. The extra episode's denouement is right. Even if some persons consider it as a waste of time, the plot only seeks to set up the events that are going to happen in the second season. The pacing is right, and the art is the same. As a positive aspect now I am eager for more and I want to be ready for the second season.

This sequel doesn't accomplish much. Unless being momentarily annoying is considered an accomplishment. Mrs. mute is still mute and mr. dense so dense they could have as well named the specials 'Extra Dense'. Kohara, the 2nd harem option is still the only person who feels even slightly human. But even her purpose in these specials seems to be hitting mr. dense and make him atone physical pain. This scene is, by the way, followed by bunch of side character dudes also hitting mr. dense because apparently, if girl hits a man, it's the man's fault and other men should also start punching him. I am notsure if this is supposed to be humor, but a) I don't especially enjoy It'S a PrAnK bRo -tier jokes, and b) it feels like pro-misandrist propaganda at best. In terms of story-writing, more romance cliches are introduced and this time around 3rd party is trying to cut the obvious canon pairing's relations because manblaming whilst people at the same time tell mrs. mute not to blame herself. Kohara's story is equally shitty since she challenges the bro in a match and then rages, also blaming him for everything. I thought the main season was still average despite its problems, but now these ideals presented here are downright appalling. I am not sure if this is giving worse picture of pussywhipped men or girl gamers, but I guess it doesn't matter since this doesn't represent any parties with realism. The mary sue traits are pushed even further here which makes mrs. mute's character feel even more like an empty object. There doesn't even seem to be any advancement coming in the future either due to more irrelevant side characters being introduced in the purpose of side-tracking, and the same story elements being recycled. The alarming part is that this side-tracing filler is much more substantial than the main story line. Let me just quote mr. dense: "We will be separated again. I wonder how many times we have been separated already." I will tell you; too fucking many. So many that our story and "characters" can now be described with one singular word: fake. Even rushed conclusion would have been better than this level of lame.

“High Score Girl: Extra Stage” is the sequel to the TV Anime “High Score Girl”. It chronicles the life of gamer Yaguchi Haruo growing up as a teenager in the mid to early 90s. Story: 7/10 The story in itself isn’t anything too special in these three episodes. It wraps up the loose ends that were left behind by the initial 12 episodes. This includes Yaguchi’s final duel with Hidaka and the ever increasing strictness in Ono’s home life. It can get pretty cheesy at times but there’s some charm to it that will keep you interested. Art: 8/10 One of the first things people probably see about thisshow is the strange art style. It uses CGI bodies with hand drawn heads and faces. It’s a strange combo but I didn’t find that it hurt the show. It actually started to grow on me if anything. I think the biggest positive I can give to the art is Ono’s expressions all throughout. She doesn’t have any dialog outside of non-verbal noises so her body language is all you have to go on. The studio has done a fantastic job at getting her emotions across as she’s very expressive. Sound: 8/10 The intro and outro are superb. As for the the score during the show itself, they do a solid job at helping to build the atmosphere or mood of a specific scene. I never really felt like it chewed the scenery which is a good thing. Character: 9/10 One of the biggest strengths of this show has always been the characters and that fact holds true here. Everyone in the show is lovable and memorable so I enjoy watching them interact with each other. I even enjoyed a couple of the new characters introduced within this OVA such as Ono’s sister. Enjoyment: 10/10 What can I say? I’m a total sucker for all these video game references. The best part is that it never really comes across as if it’s forced or cringy, it does it’s own thing and I really enjoy it for that. Overall: 9/10 “High Score Girl: Extra Stage” is an enjoyable affair that you’re sure to enjoy if you like slice of life. I especially recommend it if you have an affinity for retro video games as I do.

This OVA sequel is a really good step-up from the series, they managed to publish it in 1080p, which really makes the video much more "crisper" than 720p. You get the answer to the climax of the series, handful of new characters are introduced and at least for me, there's a lot less "filling" in the OVA than in the original series, which keeps me entertained and made me binge the OVA. Sound, at least for me, got a bit better, but not that much that it would be easy to notice straight away (better quality). Overall, this is what a sequel is supposed to be, and Iwould've like to have more episodes than 3. I'll be on the lookout for the next sequel.

Following straight after the final episode of the series, these three OVA are in no rush to complete the story, which is surprisingly a good thing. We get new interesting characters introduced, development for the existing characters and the story continues at a steady pace that makes you want more. Like the series, the art, music, opening and closing are the same. Though I do feel Oono has gotten even more expressive. If you loved the series, you will love the extra episodes too, they are just as great. What more is there to say, except here's hoping we get more High Score Girl in the future.
