Synopsis
Conan was the only child born on Remnant Island, a place settled by a group of refugees while they fled a terrifying wave of magnetic bombs that wiped out most of humanity. After 20 years, most of the castaways have died, save for Conan and the wise old man that raised him. Believing Remnant Island to be the last inhabited place on Earth, Conan is shocked when he discovers a young girl named Lana washed up on the beach one day. Though he is thrilled to learn that humanity has survived, Lana tells him the nation of Industria wants her as a hostage to force her grandfather, Dr. Lao, to power their machinery. Their conversation is cut short when Industria's top pilot, Monsley, suddenly appears and seizes Lana. Determined to save her, Conan immediately sets off from Remnant Island and begins a journey that will ultimately determine the fate of the world. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Mirai Shounen Conan, an anime classic that I had high expectations for, and how could I not, especially seeing that all the reviews on MAL are good, that's why I'm here to burst the bubble. Let's start with the characters, specifically Conan, a textbook Gary Stu, with ridiculous strength, speed and agility, as well as a blatant plot armor (except if it's spanking, you will understand when you watch it), as well as being a siiiimp because of the useless Lana, the perfect damsel in distress, and of course Jimsy, the only one I can't criticize, in fact he has an interesting character development. The villains arethe worst, a nation of very bad and very stupid bad guys, led by the great villain, with an evil laugh and the most cliché and flat motivation in history. Then there's and the message, which is basically "nature is good, war is bad" but put in such an obvious and superficial way, a mediocre environmental pamphlet. Even the action is questionable, it's funny at the beginning but it becomes repetitive. And even with all that said, I can't hate this anime, I don't love it either, but it still has its charm, the drawing and animation quality is excellent for its time, and the designs are Ghibli (before Ghibli) everywhere you look. Conan despite all is cute and overflows with charisma, even Lana has a couple of redeeming moments, although for me she is still the worst of the protagonists. And while most of the action is repetitive, there are some that stand out for good, especially the final battle, which was exciting and fun at the same time. Even the cliché environmentalist message doesn't bother me that much, I guess I forgive it because of how old it is. All in all it's not a marvel, but being the classic that it is I think it's still worth watching, just don't go in with too high expectations, or you might end up disappointed.

I feel like if this show were to be summed up in two words, it would be Criminally underrated We all know Hayao Miyazaki. Made some awesome films that are still some of my favorites. I wanted to watch some of his earlier works to see if they were as good as the ghibli movies, and future boy Conan caught my eye. I had been planning on watching it for years, but I didn’t know he worked on it. So in the span of about two months (I’m a slow anime watcher I know), I finished the series, and it’s easily a hidden gem. Future boyConan is pretty similar to some of his future works, like Nausicaa and Laputa, but especially the latter. The two have similar plots, the two main characters of both works are basically the same just with a few changes to their designs, and of course, both were directed by Miyazaki. You can say it’s a precursor to Laputa since it came out 8 years before that film did. Now, for my review Let’s start off with animation. Ghibli films are known for having incredible animation. Heck, everything Miyazaki and Takahata worked on had incredible animation, check out castle of cagliostro from 1979! The animation in that film is unbelievably great! But is the animation in this show good? Yeah! Not the best animation ever, it was a tv series that aired in the 70s, so they didn’t have the biggest budget ever, but for what they had, the animation is good! There are some really good perspective and camera movement shots and really fluid moments and it’s just really impressive, especially considering the whole thing was done with cel animation. Again, not the greatest animated ghibli related thing ever, but it’s still good. I would like to mention something about the art. In the earlier episodes, the design of Lana is noticeably off. It’s a bit hard to explain but watching the show you’ll know something’s wrong. It can be a bit off putting at first, but luckily her design gets better. I also love the shows expressive characters. Every character seems so full of life and a ton of goofy and realistic expressions, especially with Conan, Jimsy, and Dyce The story is good. Like I mentioned earlier, very similar to castle in the sky, but I’d say that’s a compliment since I loved the story for the movie. The one thing I do like about Conan’s story better than Laputa is that it actually has a satisfying conclusion instead of them laughing and flying off into the sunset, and how you’ve seen how the characters have grown Throughout the story. It’s incredibly entertaining and easy to get into. The final episode especially is fantastic, but I’d rather leave the viewer to watch it. The Characters are also great! Conan and Lana are incredibly likable and fun protagonists, jimsy was kinda annoying, monsley is a girl boss and some of the other minor characters were really funny, Dyce in particular. The villian however I think is fine, disappointing at worst. A bit forgettable most of the time, but he’s cool in the final episodes he appears in. Music was good too What more can I say about this show? It’s insanely good! The fact this show has a little over 50,000 members makes me sad, because it’s genuinely one of the best anime I’ve seen, which I wasn’t expecting for a show that’s almost half a century old. Incredible show and I couldn’t recommend it enough. Check it out when you get the chance! Trust me, you won’t regret it

I will not spoil anything in this review I want you to be able to enjoy it free of spoilers like I did. This is a masterpiece. Its timeless. It's very uncommon to find a show that is enjoyable for all ages who watch it. Those of you who have seen studio ghibli films. This is basically a Ghibli film but in a 20+ episode series. As such it has everything you'd expect; action, adventure, beautiful art & worldbuilding, great music & characters, moments that make you laugh, get you hype and those classic emotional moments. Just try it out if you look at other peoples reviews even the most critical people find enjoyment with this series, so try it out

So his name was Conan. I remember this anime from my childhood. Honestly back then I didn't even know it was an anime. I come from a different country and the show was dubbed in my language I had the same name as the female lead. I love everything about this anime, from the way it envisioned the future to the character's development, friendships, and backgrounds. Honesty you can't find an anime anything like it. It's no miracle show that's for sure. but somehow the nostalgic effect of it all mixed with how exciting the show is makes for a great recommendation overall I love thisshow so much that I can't even put it into words.

Hayao Miyazaki is the guy who directed this. Hands down. But seriously and I really mean seriously. Imagine watching the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie and impose the background of a post-apocalyptic world (obviously as indirectly described in the synopsis) dominated by the color blue and very dark blue of the sky like the early posters or still images in search engines of this series. This would exactly be what Future Boy Conan is as your first impression on an emotional level. Now I just said "post-apocalyptic world". It's true with the usual pop cultural trope that war is bad, but what is worse? Obviously thewar that destroys the whole planet Earth. I know, it's not pleasant. However, the story of the series itself will make you yearn for your heart that world peace must be promoted at all cost without being politically affiliated in any ideologies. I wish I could give 10 for the sound, but the opening song is not that pleasant in my ears. So 9 it is.

When I imagine post-apocalyptic settings, I usually think of either a global total war escalating into nuclear war or a pandemic. The resulting landscape is composed either mainly of wastelands, with arable and fertile land making for a miniscule percentage, or by dystopias and/or dying cities with crumbling infrastructure within a collapsed or even semi-thriving natural environment. Of course that is not to say there are not original interpretations of such settings; examples include S.T.A.L.K.E.R, the Tiberian series of C&C and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, showcasing radical concepts for an already spicy genre. However, there are also settings that truly deviate, such asA Wind Named Amnesia, Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko and the current object of this review. [1. Beginning with the setting and story…] [a.] Future Boy Conan adapted The Incredible Tide, a sci-fi novel of Alexander Key, yet Hayao Miyazaki took creative liberties in line with his values as an artist, in order to make the story optimistic and kid-friendly. Unlike his ensuant manga Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, running between 1982 and 1994, Conan is not too dark/heavy and its narrative is quite simple and straightforward. It's a sweet and digestible adventure story but by all means also remains a post-apocalyptic work. Each episode begins with an opening sequence on the preceding apocalypse: during a total war in 2008, magnetic super-weapons disrupted the Earth’s structure and caused cataclysmic earthquakes that culminated in billions dying and in submerging the five continents, leaving scattered islands as their remnants. Throughout the narrative, the post-apocalyptic setting is organic and omnipresent, and evident from nature, urban ruins or survivors’ lifestyles and heavily reminded me of Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko in aspects. I won’t say more on the setting to avoid spoilers. [b.] The tale begins in 2021, with 11 year-old Conan living alongside his grandfather in a tiny remnant of the continents. The adventure is initiated after a “boy meets girl” circumstance, with Conan embarking in order to save Lanna from Industria, the remnants of a belligerent power during the total war. Throughout this journey, he encounters new friends/allies and antagonists in equal measure, and he acquires first-hand experience with the broader world, but also become one of the seeds towards a brighter future for the remnants of mankind. Themes of sustainable living and condemnation of rampant industrialism persist throughout the narrative, as do of rebirth. One of the most notable pros of its narrative is direction, with very smooth pacing and scene transitions, feeling neither stagnant nor too forced; sound direction is also connected to this, more on section [3]. [2. Continuing with characters…] Conan is an atypical, hyper-competent child: although young and innocent, he is also very clever, plus physically and mentally strong. Courtesy of living as a semi-free ranging child, he displays high adaptability and situational awareness alongside kinesthetic intelligence, that allow him to pull off stunts and make it through situations that could turn fatal. On the rest: I liked Jimsy, the plucky comedic relief and oafish companion of Conan, with whom he has an interesting chemistry (especially in earlier episodes), captain Dyce (an entertaining and dynamic character) and doctor Lao. Others are a mixed bag. For example, the female lead Lanna is in my opinion limited to a damsel-in-distress, whereas Lepka falls flat as a megalomaniacal villain without complexity and most supporting characters serve limited roles, I could not invest to or empathize with many. I do understand this was a work meant to cater to children and quite some roles served as archetypes for later Miyazaki works (e.g. Conan, Lanna and Monsley), but I would expect somewhat richer characterization from a 26 episode series. [3. And concluding with the audiovisuals…] [a.] Although it is a 70s series, Conan boasts a higher animation quality than many modern series, despite often employing limited animation. From action sequences to special effects (all hand-drawn, nothing computer-generated), the quality is consistent and smooth yet dynamic, be it a seaplane soaring the skies, Conan throwing his fishing harpoon or a boar chase scene. To be fair however, the show sacrificed in character designs as a trade-off for greater quality of animation; main character designs can be simplistic in models while missing key details, whereas supporting actors' have it worse, being unremarkable and too similar. Where the artwork does excel in is backgrounds and colors. Be it submerged ruins, the picturesque countryside of High Harbor or other islands’ ecosystems I would sometimes pause to admire their textures and meticulous drawing. Also, the color palette looks natural, down-to-earth and smooth to the eye. [b.] As for sound: the music is sweet and nostalgic without sounding too juvenile (including OP, ED and background music) and sound direction is solid, with sound effects and voice acting matching well the action or scene in question. More unique sound effects could have been used occasionally (e.g. during gunfights), but at other times I enjoyed hearing an earthquake or Conan operating underwater. Voice acting is decent. My favorite seiyuu was of Jimsy, whose “burly boy” voice contrasted well with Conan’s softer and Lanna’s more feminine voice. My favorite aspect of sound direction however is its balance between silent and dialogue-heavy moments. Occasionally, dialogue may be kept to a minimal or halted, in order to allow characters’ movements and/or nature do the talk. I'm not sure whether I would characterize certain scenes as employing "negative space" as is the case with the Ghibli filmography, but those more quiet and "show, don't tell" moments allowed for the narrative to maintain a steady pacing while not overwhelming viewers between intervals. Hope you enjoyed my review!

Some time has passed since the world was at war fighting one another with ultra magnetic weapons of mass destruction, ravaging Earth in the process. As humans desperately try to survive the horrific conditions of Earth, a group build a ship in an attempt to escape into space but fail and end up crashing on the remains of a island. Earth had now restored most of its nature but there was only one survivor that was still alive today, living together with his grandson Conan. One day, Conan comes across a girl named Lana who had come from High Harbour Island and they soon discover therewere other survivors on Earth. Unfortunately, Lana's pursuers from Industria soon catch up with her and take her away. And so, Conan sets off from the island for the first time, going on a grand adventure meeting new friends and foes alike as he seeks to rescue Lana and help her reach her grandfather. This show was Hayao Miyazaki's debut role as Anime director before he co-founded Ghibli. Right from the very first episode you can see plenty of Miyazaki's familiar style that will probably remind you of his Ghibli movies such as the animation styles, world setting, character behavior and designs despite the rough voice acting and sound effects from the late 1970s. The show mostly resembles the action and technology from his later movies Nausicaa and Laputa while its comedy will probably remind you more of his light-hearted movies such as Totoro. As it seems to be the trend with Miyazaki's work, it's yet based on another Western novel named "The Incredible Tide" by Alexander Key. It might be 40 years old (at the time of writing this) but it's got a great balance of action, comedy, friendship, romance and adventure. There's so many themes going on and it's a bit of everything from Ghibli's more glorious days really. At first it might seem like a show about a bunch of innocent kids being caught up in conflict but the characters are likeable as with Miyazaki's other movies, each with their own distinct characteristic (those toes!). You have to admire the bravery and determination Conan shows making up for his naivity and balancing out his superhuman abilities. Both Conan and Lana has some good chemistry going on between them and Lana isn't your cliche damsel-in-distress as with Miyazaki's later works as they struggle through troublesome times together. She is as strong a character as Conan just without his superhuman abilities. It's also great to see the show doesn't go with the "never give up" immortal characters mentality that a lot of Anime shows go with and it's not afraid to admit defeat or weaknesses in situations. After building up on our protagonists, the plot itself really picks up just about half way through with yet another familiar theme of nature versus power lusting humans but, it's directed so well the drama keeps you watching. And of course, since it's from the founder of Ghibli, there's no fan service aimed at the male viewer or the moe style that seems to be the trend with most shows these days. The Furigana in its episode titles suggests it's aimed mainly at children as it's used to help them read Kanji and even includes a mini guessing game in the eye-catches but, I think it can be enjoyable by all ages as with his other works. If you enjoyed Miyazaki's classic movies, still enjoy them and don't mind the old art style and retro sci-fi look, you'll most likely enjoy this. A lot of the art still looks great such as the mecha designs but even the backgrounds can still look good - especially now that it's been HD remastered for modern screens. It probably shows the staff involved were ahead of their times with all the effort the they put into the backgrounds. There is another series misleading named as "Future Boy Conan II" but it's actually not a sequel and focuses on different characters while keeping a similar world setting of magnetic warfare. So, are you a fan of Ghibli Miyazaki's classics such as Laputa and Totoro? Yes? Then go watch this. You won't be disappointed.

Originally reviewed 7.June.2015 Third time is the charm for Miyazaki and Takahata. This time around Miyazaki has taken over the majority of the work, while Takahata helps in directing and storyboard. Boy did the duo hit everything just right in this anime. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the world's scientists have used horrible earthquake machines as weapons of mass destruction to ruin the Earth's tectonic plates thus causing water-world. The story revolves around a boy name Conan and the little girl Lana who washes up on his isolated little island where he has grown. Conan himself is extremely lovable and not only him. The setting andplot has so much charm, it just can't be explained well enough. Lana is the central focal point of how the plot plays out, but Conan changes the game consistently with his antics that each and every episode remains fresh. The amount of danger is ever present creating a constantly worrisome environment, while somehow also having a mold of serious subject matter as well. Animation really takes a huge leap, and while that could be technology or Miyazaki taking a step in, either way it's gorgeous. The detail and background art is extremely well done and doesn't reflect the time period this came out in. Pacing fluctuates a bit by switching between action filled scenes and arcs to a sudden halt of melancholy feeling and dialogues. This is done quite well though. This is essentially a 26 episode Studio Ghibli movie having all the Miyazaki trademarks from fun aircrafts, character designs, to the ever present theme of man vs nature. There is a very lovable cast of characters and even though the main villain is fairly one-dimensional, the story never needs the villain to be anything other than that. It really is about the character interactions, the development of Conan and crew, and the fun sense of adventure throughout. From the industrial waste filled smoke stacks of Industria to the peaceful farmlands, each environment plays a separate role in the story in how Conan and the people he meets along the way view their world. Honestly, it is disappointing how many anime fans have not watched this. Don’t let the year this came out make cause any sort of hesitation in watching Future Boy Conan at all! Do yourself a favor and find any way you can to watch this anime at all costs.

Future Boy Conan is one of the classics of TV anime. It's a loose adaptation of an American sci-fi novel, Alexander Key's The Incredible Tide, but, perhaps more crucially to folks looking into older anime, it's Hayao Miyazaki's first directoral work, and his touch lends this story a gravity that is pretty rare in animation. That isn't to say that this is a story told in a serious style. It adheres to the gag-joke conventions of 70's era cartooning frequently, and the action sequences beg you to suspend disbelief as Conan once again(and he's constantly doing this stuff) hangs onto a ledge by the tips ofhis toes, breaks out of his chains by flexing, dances around bullets, or throws his harpoon with perfect accuracy. He is a "very strong" kid, and that's all the explanation we get for why he, and a good portion of the cast, are apparently superhuman. It's a good cast, though. The characters are all memorable, well voiced, and demonstrate a lot of plot agency rather than being just pawns or "side characters". Anyway, the themes and topics covered are all stuff that is just as crucial today as it was then: The impact of humans on their environment, and what it means to live well. This show foreshadows pretty much every other Miyazaki work. The premise is that the planet was ruined by "magnetic weapons", and small fragments of humanity remain on tiny islands or ships. Conan, our hero, gets pulled by various plot events into an adventure to find a missing girl, uncover some mysteries about the past, and stop various antagonists from repeating the same mistakes. What sorts of things does he find on the way? Just the usual: A dying industrial society, enslaving the islands around it to feed its machines with trash. And a pastoral, "back to the farm" society that is apparently peaceful and deindustrialized. The plot firmly favors the latter, sidestepping the philosophical conundrums of whether that life is truly good for everyone, but allows some antagonists to exist throughout to keep things moving. The world building done here is excellent, and you won't find anything else like it, except maybe in other Miyazaki. It builds up the action at a leisurely pace - fast for its era, but slower by modern standards - so although you hear about all these locations, you don't get to see all of them until you're well into the series, and that makes them more of a treat when they finally arrive. As with a lot of older anime, I have to mark down the presentation quality since the style is antiquated and it doesn't have the budget, techniques, or technologies available now. But this is more true of the sound, which is typical 70's themes and SFX, than the art, which is limited by analog processes and sticks to a cartoony, low-detail style, but still demonstrates some really great and consistent animation, with good storyboarding and very few(maybe no?) reused clips. Why would I not recommend it? If you don't like other Miyazaki stuff, that might be one reason. Or if you want more of an edgy, blood-spurting and guts-showing action style, or a more grounded, realistic drama, this one will disappoint you with its unbelievable antics.

This series has a special place in my heart because it was one of the first anime series I've ever watched when I was a kid ,it's considered a classic in the Arab world and get broadcasted regularly on tv channels for more than three decades heck even my father had watched it when he was a teenager it's one of the most well known anime title in my country if you ask anyone in the street he would recognize it instantly, if you consider yourself an anime fan you should watch this series because it's been directed by the great myazaki. if you watch thisanime you will notice that it began all myazaki regular tropes such as the environmental theme ,the amazing flying machines the character design this series came before the foundation of studio ghibli and you will notice that it served as prototype of the first ghibli movie castle in the sky. the setting : Set in a post-apocalyptic world after the third world war ended and the humanity along with the most known world has been destroyed and most earth land mass had drowned under water and the rest of the land is mostly waste deserted land with few exceptions. You have industria which is a power full nation that inherited some of the remaining technology of the war and it's trying to hold more power and resources. plot: The core of the plot is the story of boy meets a girl then the girl get kidnapped by industria soldiers and the boy began a quest to find her along the way he will meet many interesting and funny people who would help him . characters: A colourful and likable cast of character we have conan (adnan in the arabic dub) the hot headed boy who possess inhuman strength his feats are awesome like lefting a group of men who jumped on him or climbing a huge tower using only his pare hands and feet you have also the redhead primative boy and the hilarious captain (bardon me i don't know their name in japanese)the chemistry between the character is top notch you will laugh so much on Conan and his friends during their adventure the show has some of the funniest moments I've ever seen in anime the trio of Conan ,the bushy redhead, and of course the captain will make you laugh whenever they're on the screen but the cast isn't perfect for example Lana is the only character that I found annoying she is more of plot device to move the plot forward rather than an actual character also the main villain while being evil and serving the purpose for being the villain is one dimensional Bastard who is just pure evil and ruthless something rare in myazaki works the only other character like him in other myazaki films is muska from castle in the sky. art and animation : It's outdated but you shouldn't let that prevent you from watching it also the art work is very similar to studio ghibli work you know those bushy moustache. soundtrack : It's good verdict: A great shonen adventure that has environmental theme it's basically 26 episode studio ghibli movie the fans of myazaki should watch this.

This is a series so imiginative in its artistry and so mature in its execution, non-anime and non-cartoon fans couldn't help but be drawn in. "Future Boy Conan" provides one of the best examples of animated storytelling available to watch. To boot, its one of the most entertaining stories I've had the pleasure of watching. FBC is so entertaining because of its high technical and artistic merits. Technically, the animation and artistry is hard to match even today. The imaginitive settings are gorgeously rendered, and the shear number of places the story goes, like a giant solar tower or a flying fortress or rocket-come-house, willkeep you entertained and amazed. While the character designs are decidedly muted, it allows for truly comprehensive and kinetic animation. Each character is defined more through the detailed animation of their little actions and quirks than anything they say. Watch the amazing gymnastic feats of Conan (titular boy of the future), and you will be as impressed as the more technically advanced action shows of modern times. Of course, it's unfair to both "Future Boy Conan" and modern series to make comparisons between the two. FBC aims for much different goals than most modern action or drama shows. Specifically, FBC is less focused on its characters (each one more archetype than flesh and blood) and more plot and adventure oriented. Not to say the characters aren't entertaining, but don't expect real connections with any. "Future Boy Conan's" real strength is its charm. If you have seen any Studio Ghibli films, you will be familiar with Miyazaki's trademark whimsy present through all of FBC. The entire series feels like a classic Ghibli film extended into a 26 episode series. For any fan of animation and adventure, that is a good thing. I cannot recommend this series enough. "Future Boy Conan" is a real gem among animation. With child-like exuberance, the story never fails to engross you in its drama, but still maintains a kind of maturity in its animation and direction that makes it accessible to all audiences.

I absolutely loved Mirai Shounen Conan (forgive me for using the japanese name), the story is based on this planet, after the mankind has destroyed and polluted the earth in a world war. The story starts on a small island, where Conan lives with his grandfather, thinking they are the lone survivors of the war. But they come to see that there are others alive when a girl washes on the shore of their island.. The Story is an instant classic, with the theme of good vs evil. I think the story will appeal for every age, it has these certain catches, and twists in it also.It is also thought that the story and the whole serie is a prototype for Laputa, Castle in the Sky. But still, even if it is a prototype, I consider this anime to be as good as Laputa, or even better. The Animation is expectional for this old anime, obviously there is no CG, and very few duplicate frames. The overall animation is far above the standards of the 70's. The sound is also very good, but not perfect. There are some parts when there could have been better sounds, but still, excellent sound for anime more than 30years ago ! Now.. the characters. They are just excellent, they are all so well designed that you will fall in love with atleast one of them instantly! Conan is your typical wild boy, with a pure heart, and a strenght beyond a normal human. And he is the character I loved second-most in this serie. Then there is his friend Jimsy, who is the Conan's partner and he is also very good character, with lots of funny moments with him :) And of course the heroine part is played by a girl named Lana. I think she develops as a character excellently. But I who I loved above all others is a captain, who is in my opinion the most diversative character of the serie. He also develops as a character in the serie A LOT! So look forward for meeting him in the serie :) There are also bunch of a bit side-characters but still extremely well developed! I think the overall enjoyment couldn't have been better. I had lots of good time spent with this anime. Time went by with a smile on my face, with a serious face, laughing and a bit crying too :) Overall this anime is one of the best I've ever seen, with excellent and intriguing story, very good animation, and lots of memorable and excellent characters. This anime deservers a lot more appreciation that is has gotten. Don't look at the year when this anime was made, and don't start watching it with prejudice. Just go and buy this anime or download it from some fansub group, I guarantee that you won't be disappointed!!
